Although often overlooked, images linked to online posts are an easy and effective way to drive traffic to blog or website content. 

Given that search engines place image results above websites, viewers are more likely to click on a photo than a link when browsing the internet. This doesn’t mean that advertisers should stop using websites and only post photos, instead, they should pay careful attention to the images they’re using and be sure to link back to their site in as many ways as possible.

There are three main ways a company can capitalize on a user’s tendency to click an image and redirect that traffic to their blog or website content.

1. Name the Image

When uploading an image to a site, the file name should be relevant to what the image contains. Take it a step further and include the same SEO-friendly keywords used in the content portion for the file name. Doing so will guarantee that when a user searches for those keywords, the site will pop up both in the image and web results categories. Either way, a consumer is bound to come across that information.

2. Caption the Image

In some cases, a picture isn’t worth a thousand words. Words are worth a thousand…words. Linking a caption to an image automatically increases its chances for being searched and found by a user. Similar to the image name, using predetermined SEO lingo only helps the cause. Advertisers are bound to see traction if they align their image, caption and content in a way that is both searchable and relevant.

3. Hashtag the Image

Many people don’t actually realize the value of hash tagging a photo. While some users might just see it as a fun trend, the act of hash tagging a photo automatically puts it into a database of photos with the same tag. If someone wants to browse through images of waterfalls, they simply have to type in “#waterfalls” to any social media site and they will instantly find a library of countless photos that likely relate to that keyword. Hashtags can be included in captions to maximize the likelihood of it showing up on a list of search results under a given word.

To summarize, companies should view blog and website images as a traffic driver. People are naturally drawn to appealing aesthetics. Couple a nice visual with a humorous caption or trendy hashtag and the content linked to the image will generate a higher volume of viewership, guaranteed. Oh! And always remember the golden rule of online marketing: stay in line with SEO.
