For those who post quality content on their websites and blogs, Google’s AuthorRank seems like a great fit. Increasing your website rank by determining who already reads and shares what content you post, AuthorRank’s goal is to give you a boost with more visibility in search engine results; just by doing the following for your site:

  •  Set up an Authorship Google+ account, list your websites (Social Media accounts as well) to verify you as the site author
  • Insert this tag <rel=“author”link=“your-googlplus-url”/> into the blog or templates

It’s very easy to get started, however, there is some doubt whether AuthorRank will actually matter and be helpful for website owners. If you already post quality content and receive good search results because of it, will AuthorRank and an Authorship Google+ account really boost your traffic numbers?

Google Search Visibility

Despite the ideal goal of increasing your search engine visibility, Google Authorship is not quite a factor to directly connect an author to Google rankings. Google already uses over 200 different signals to determine page ranking, and has yet to establish Authorship as a direct ranking signal for AuthorRank.

Are Authors Actually Receiving Credit?

Despite the efforts to bring traffic flow to original content writers and credible sources online, AuthorRank still has some bugs to figure out. Plagiarism and unoriginal sites will be ever present online and Panda issues of lower quality sites rising to the top of the search engine could still happen if writers choose not to apply for Authorship. An uncredible source could simply use valuable content they did not write in order to get a better page rank while the credibility of the original source is decreased.

Before Panda, many websites just offered poor content with good keywords and in 2011, Google stopped paying attention to future attention to different sites such as Answers.com and eHow.com by de-indexing them from the database. That’s one way to give credit back to original authors and good content, but what should AuthorRank do to further improve search engines to sort out plagiarism and help the original article matter again?

What Can Google do to Make AuthorRank Matter?

With the possibility of steering away from searching just about content that writers have posted to who exactly has posted, this will change how we search for what to read online depending on who has written it. To ensure that credible authors (despite applying for Authorship or not) receive their credit, leaders in the SEO industry believe that Google AuthorRank should know when an original article was published. This way, credit will be given where credit is due.

Authorship and AuthorRank could be huge to improve the online visibility for online writers and bloggers, but there are still different measures of protecting content that need to be finalized. The system is not in the best shape, but if you do decide to apply for Authorship to begin AuthorRank now, it could help your site reach more people in the long end. To really get the most out of a higher search rank for your articles, sources such as Webds.com help clients with SEO solutions.
