WOW Media’s Matt Lovett has experienced a rapid ascent towards the top of the performance marketing world. He launched his career with a casback site when he was only 13, and has since watched his WOW brand take off to where it stands today. With a handful of sites, including WOW Cashback, WOW Hosting, and WOW Banners to name a few, Matt has expanded his brand into an international operation that currently reaches over 150 different countries. Recently, TheMail had the opportunity to talk to Matt and get his insight on all-things performance marketing.

Who are you and how did you get started in performance marketing?

Matt Lovett, Managing Director of WOW Media which runs a range of websites including WOW Trk—an international affiliate network. I’ve been in the industry since I was 13 years old. I started a cashback site with my friend whilst at school, the first offering “no minimum payout.”

What are you best known for and why?

WOW Media in general I guess. WOW has been going since 2007 and we have run a range of online sites throughout the years including a successful cashback site, British Rewards, to now running an affiliate network, WOW Trk.

What is hot with you right now?

At the moment I am really focused on a couple of things:

  1. Building new tools and features for WOW Trk. I think it’s important to offer unique tools and services for affiliates; we need to stand out. So, we are working on quite a few things to make the service for affiliates better and also tools to make it easier to generate money.
  2. Automation—I am trying to automate some of our online advertising, not only to improve the ROI but also to save time which is a big factor whilst we are growing.

What are your 5 tips for publishers?

  1. Don’t try to do too many things at once.
  2. Keep trying, if it doesn’t work at first—optimize, split test, etc…keep trying.
  3. Delegate tasks. I found this really hard to do at first, but you can’t do everything forever.
  4. If you need help, just ask.
  5. Use WOW Trk.

If you were to bet on one thing for the future right now what would it be and why?

Growth in mobile advertising, apps, mobile sites, etc. Advertisers need to focus more on mobile optimized sites and mobile advertising. Email marketers need to work more on making their emails work better on phones and promote offers which are mobile optimized.

What areas of mobile advertising/apps do you think have the greatest potential to be successful? How do you think advertisers/affiliates will utilize the mobile/app space?
Advertisers and affiliates are being far too slow about implementing changes for mobile. There is still very few mobile optimized affiliate offers and there is still an issue I know for many advertisers with mobile sites and tracking. Mobile advertising on apps is obviously a main area but also email marketing which is mobile optimised has big potential. Most people read email on their phones now, many don’t even read email on their computer and just their phones. SMS marketing is also something I think which can do well, when done correctly and the rules are followed.
In your opinion, what does the future of mobile marketing look like? Are there any good examples that are out there already?
Advertisers need to start making their site responsive, so it automatically resizes to the different mobile device screens. We have done this with most of our affiliate sites. Email marketing you can’t really target to just mobile email or desktop email so having responsive designs is something which is great for email marketers.
Any other insight into the mobile marketing and mobile app space?
There still seems to be a lack of mobile apps in the affiliate marketing space, I think affiliate networks need to start working on mobile apps, affiliates love to be able to see how much they are making whilst on the move. We are currently working on ours at the moment for release very soon.

Who do you admire in the industry and why?

Most likely Mark Pearson. He has built Markco Media up so well over the past few years and is now running one of the biggest voucher code networks. They also seem to be amazing at PR and SEO.

Who are you trying to connect with and why should they work with you?

We are always trying to connect with new affiliates and advertisers. We value ourselves on being different and are always looking to stand out, offering unique tools and features. We also have dedicated account managers to help affiliates and advertisers get the best out of our network. Big or small, we would love to work with you!
